Whatever your flooring type, Mats by JayTam, Inc. has a backing type that will best suit your needs. Mats by JayTam offers two different backing types that are each intended for different flooring types. The two backing options are cleated and smooth back.

Cleated backed mats perform best on carpeted surfaces and come standard on all WaterHog products as well as the Tri-grip Mat. The cleats help the mats stay in place better on the carpeted surfaces.

The smooth backed option is recommended on hard surfaces such as tile, marble, terrazzo, ect. We have found that the smooth backed mats slip and move less on hard surfaces.

Yellowing or discoloration of floors underneath floor mats and/or entrance mats?

From time to time customers complain that mats cause the floors beneath them to discolor. This complaint has applied both to carpet and hard surface floors such as vinyl or tile. The discoloration is usually a yellow or brown color. The most likely cause for this is moisture. There are several potential ways that moisture can cause discoloration.

• Moisture from the ground comes up through the floor until it reaches the floor surface. This moisture normally evaporates and goes unnoticed. Placement of a mat on the floor prevents the evaporation, therefore trapping the moisture, thus causing the discoloration. This seems to be most common at entrances where cold or warm air enters buildings when the door is opened causing condensation (sweating).
• Placement of mats on freshly cleaned and still damp carpet. This prevents carpet from fully drying, thereby causing discoloration.
• Moisture from the back of mats. If not properly dried, the back of mats can be damp, thereby providing moisture to cause discoloration. (Floor Mat Rental Service Companies are guilty of this!!)
• There can be a reaction between chemicals in the rubber backing and the floors or floor finishes used on hard surface floors.
• Lack of exposure to sunlight. It is common to see floors change color when they are covered by counters, file cabinets, etc. This is caused by both lack of exposure to sunlight and restricted airflow.

In most instances where mats are placed and floor discoloration results, the customer is faced with a difficult decision. Use no mat and the floor doesn’t discolor, however, the floor is damaged by tracked in soils, moisture and dirt, and the entire area deteriorates. Or use a mat and protect the floor with resulting discoloration in the area underneath the mat. Of the two, most customers select the latter.

Corrective actions: Discoloration can usually be removed by stripping and rewaxing. In the case of carpet, professional carpet cleaning is usually required.

I get a lot of questions on the best way to clean the Waterhog line of Door Mats available at Mats by JayTam. This includes:

These mats are so effective at stopping dirt and moisture because of what is called “Bi-level construction”. Bi-level construction in Waterhog mat terms, means that there are 2 surfaces on the mat. One surface that you walk on, and the other surface is where all the dirt and moisture drops – so the next person that walks in after you doesn’t pick up the dirt/soil that you left.

Because of this Bi-Level it is a little more difficult to clean – however, well worth it for what the mat does for you and your home or office, or commerical or industrial space.

Depending on where the mat is in use, here are some very easy steps to take:
1. Pick it up and shake it outside. This is common for any floor mat. Because of the construction, and solid rubber backing, you can beat it with a baseball bat if you need to!
2. Vacuum it. Set your vacuum to it lowest or bare floor setting so the bristle can reach the second level of the bi-level construction. This is easier then shaking it, and who doesn’t have a vacuum? This works in higher traffic conditions as well.
3. Extract it. This is for high traffic retail, office, airports, hotels, etc…that have an extraction machine. This is not a necessary step, but if you have the equipment, it makes short work of it.
4. Hose/Pressure wash it. When the temperature outside permits (not freezing), take your soiled Waterhog mat outside and hose it off to get all the dried on salt/dirt/soil off. Along these same lines, a pressure washer with a light/medium pressure setting works excellent as well – you can also use a mild detergent to help break up the soil/dirt. When done washing it, hang it for about an hour to let all the extra water drip. The mats dry quick, and when its dry – you will have a new mat, they clean up really well.
